Preliminus – Preliminary Illusion II
Preliminus is an independent American band blending industrial, black, and death metal. It is truly an underground-minded project featuring avant-garde, electronic, and extreme textures.
What’s charming—funny as that is to say about this kind of music—is their ability to create an unsettling, spacious atmosphere. They constantly twist and turn traditional black metal concepts by mixing in electronics alongside abstract, unexpected elements and transitions.
Preliminary Illusion II is their second EP, featuring four tracks and a total run time of 24 minutes of genuinely challenging industrial black metal. David Gray of AKERCOCKE is responsible for the EP’s artwork, and that alone should tell you plenty about what to expect from the content.
I am really enjoying the fact that each song is crafted in a manner to keep you on your toes. It’s all about the uncanny, unsettling balance struck between raw, crushing black/death metal and atmospheric industrial passages, and I think Preliminus executes this brilliantly. If you’re looking for an ugly extreme metal experience that will leave you feeling uneasy—or rather, unable to decide exactly how to feel, both during and long after the listen—you should definitely spare some time for it. At least give the epic Isometris Atmospheria a try.
