Wroht – Dissolution
Bay Area was known for being the nest of relentless thrash metal bands for decades, but with names like NECROT, RIPPED TO SHREDS or VASTUM, the scene is on the brink of becoming much more brutal than it ever was. Wroht also, is a new soldier among the ranks of these young, fresh death metal agents and they’re determined to raise this new banner up high.
Wroht released its debut album Worship Rot back in 2018, and now they’re back with their follow-up record Dissolution. They’re still pretty primitive and keeping that sense of caveman style death metal, but also pushing the band’s sound to new extremes with more intricate musicianship. Music here is a mix of the raw intension of CANNIBAL CORPSE, MORBID ANGEL and BOLT THROWER, has some blackened vibes and a good amount technical grooviness from bands like DECAPITATED. Sounds good on paper right? It sounds good on speakers too.
When compared with Worship Rot, its clear that Wroht have evolved for the better. Variety of influences I mentioned are integrated subtly, and the music becomes more than constant banging with creative, smart twists. Tight riffing carries through every song but there are some cool licks and leads like the one on Degradation and epic closer, Dissolution. Its not proggy, but seldom you’ll encounter with odd-time signatures, bass-leading transitions and sharp twists. They’re all buried in a constant grooviness, and that what makes Dissolution is such a quality listen for me.
Ivan Peric is a beast on vocals. Loved his gutturals, and songs like Decay’s Embrace have some of his cool screams too. However, the most interesting part of his vocals is how similar to a younger Mikael Åkerfeldt. Think about his BLOODBATH days and deep growls on OPETH‘s first couple of records, mix it with a hint of David Vincent and you’ll have what Ivan Peric has achieved here. Amazing work through and through.
Just give this a listen and I’m sure it will become one of the best discoveries of 2024. Any death metal fan with a good sense of groove would love Dissolution. Nothing is overdone, elongated or missing anything. This is a really, really good death metal record and we’re on short on death metal in 2024, its even more valueble to me. Well done Wroht, and please don’t make us wait for 6 years this time.
